NER Dinner Dance 2011

Review of the Championships of 2011 – North Eastern region:
2011 has been a very successful year for the North Eastern Region, with the region represented at every Championship by a variety of different clubs. It was made all the better by the super performances by each of the NER members who competed, with members picking up prizes across a range of grades and disciplines and all the supporters who came along to volunteer and help at each of the championships.

The 1st of the championships was the National Hunter Trial Championships, held in April in Dartfield, Galway where Cheval’s Angela Day and Elaine Carroll won the Adv. Primary Pairs competition.

The National SJ Championships were held in July in Mullingar EC. The region had members from Castle Hill, Boyneside, Killossery, Cheval and Slane & Balrath in attendance with Castle Hill’s Mary Duff winning the AP Championships on Cullen Mor Class and Tracey McKeown coming 3rd in the AP Mini-Derby on Cotton Soxs. Cheval’s Laura Carrick was 4th in the Adv.Inter Championship riding My Foxy Lass and Killossery’s Thomas Dunne was 2nd in the Primary Championship.

The Team SJ Championships took place on the Sunday of the RDS Horse Show and, following on from their win in the qualifier in May, Ashbrook represented the region where they put in a good performance, with luck just escaping them on the day.

The Masters Series final was next, again held in Mullingar EC in August. We had several members from Cheval and Killossery who were in the running for league places in the Inter, Adv. Inter and Open/Adv Open leagues. On completion of 2 days of competition, Cheval’s Laura Carrick came home in 2nd place in the Adv. Inter league, riding My Foxy Lass and Killossery’s Brian Cassidy finished in 6th in this league. This was a very good result for both combinations who had shown a lot of dedication attending most of the legs of the league and finishing in the prizes to be so competitive for the final and in contention for league prizes.

The Dressage Championships held in Grove, Tipperary followed the Masters Series final in August. Members from Cheval, Ashbrook, Border Counties and Castle Leslie competed, with Michael Moore from Ashbrook coming 3rd in the Open Championship riding Gurteen Eclipse and Castle Leslie’s Sharron McKeever coming 4th in the AP Championship riding Cosmic Rolo. Border Counties Margaret Mallon and Carmel Finnegan also finished in the ribbons, coming 5th and 6th respectively in the Primary Championships.

The final Championship for 2011 was the National Horse Trials Championships held in early September in Annaharvey Farm in Offaly. Members from Border Counties, Boyneside, Killossery, Cheval, Castle Leslie, Castle Hill, Broadmeadows, Milestone Lodge and Kilronan all competed. The Border Counties quartet of Fiona Gilliland, Rosemary Bellew, Caroline McQuillan and Laura Murphy Finn won the team championship. Fiona also won the Adv Open Championship, Rosemary was 5th in the Adv Inter Championship and Caroline won the Inter championship. Orlaith Frawley from Milestone Lodge was 2nd and Bernie Foley from Cheval were also 5th in the Inter Championship. In the Adv Primary Championship, Sharron McKeever from Castle Leslie was 5th. In the non-championship classes, Gerry O’Byrne from Cheval and Sarah Hennessey from Boyneside were 5th and 6th respectively. In the Young Horse class, Boynesides John Melvin was 4th, while in the Adv. Primary, Evanne McKenna from Castle Leslie and Sarah Richardson from Boyneside were 3rd and 5th respectively.

(SOCK) Team Showjumping Challenge - 31st July 2011:
Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge (SOCK) is a recently established non profitorganisation, dedicated to raising much needed funds for research and awareness into ovarian cancer. Cheval members Jane Keating and Aishling Bradwell are committee members of SOCK and Cheval Riding Club very kindly donated the use of their grounds for the SOCK Team SJ Challenge which took place on the 31st of July.

SOCK Winners

A total of 21 teams competed over the Laura Carrick designed track. The event proved to attract the biggest entries Cheval has seen all year with riders jumping one round in the morning and one again in the afternoon. The life size plastic horses organised by Cheval’s Trisha Gallagher gave the bank a decorative element and proved to be a rider scare more so than a horse one!!

The showjumping was judged by Cheval’s Christine Walsh and four teams went through to the jump off - Horse Mad Store Junior Team (Captain: Taylor Cummins), Drynham Gold (Captain: Laura Snow), Drynham Wizards (Captain: Niamh Mateer) and Odd Socks (Captain: Laura Carrick). Taylor Cummins and Laura Carrick were the only two captains who managed to keep all poles in place. Laura Carrick riding My Foxy Lass a 7 year old mare by Westside Mirah, out of a Touchdown mare, owned by Enda Monk was the eventual winner on a time of 34.69 while Taylor Cummins passed the finish line on 38.22. The show had a fun atmosphere and this was evident with Adam Monk who jumped his first cross two weeks ago took to the ring riding Eddie owned by Cheval treasurer Ger Farrell. Adam was part of the Sockalicious team which were placed 5th. The leading rider and best "dressed" awards were judged by Cheval’s Aileen Bradish who awarded a Waterford crystal leading rider vase kindly sponsored by Noel Bayle Interiors to Laura Snow and the best "dressed" award went to the Giddy Up Gang who received vouchers kindly sponsored by COPA Ireland.

SOCK Challenge

The show proved to be a great day out for all the family with a barbecue, cake sale and bouncy castle. The dog show was a great success and was judged by dog trainer Roxanne Byrne from Doggie Day Day, a dog walking and boarding kennels. The monster raffle was the star attraction of the day with prizes such as showjumping lessons with Cian O Connor and Jack Doyle and a sketch by Tony O Connor Equine artist as main prizes to name but a few.

The committee of SOCK would like to thank everyone who attended and supported this event. Nearly €4,000 was raised on the day and this will be channelled into ovarian cancer research and awareness.
